Venice to Switzerland

We started our day with rubbish collection. Venice has no trucks, so garbage is collected every day by people walking around with handcarts. They knock on your door in the morning, and you take down whatever type of trash is being collected that day. Today was green waste and recycling. That little cart has to be taken over all the little bridges every day! They get dumped into a garbage boat, and apparently the saying is “the larger boat is on top,” which means “don’t mess with the giant garbage boat; you’ll lose.”

After packing up our place and storing our luggage, we caught the vaporetto to another part of town to shop for masks.

We went to a store recommended by our guide, where every mask was handmade and unique. The woman running the shop has been making them for 43 years.

We went to another nearby mask shop looking for a less expensive option. They were also all handmade, but they were a little less precious, so we could try them on.

This shop offered a workshop where you could make your own masks, guided by one of their artists. We wished we had time to stay for a workshop.

From there we took a boat to the bus to the airport, to catch a Swiss air flight to Geneva. Swiss air gives you chocolate on each flight, so we were all kind of excited to have two really short flights (changing planes in Zurich) rather than one longer one. Double the chocolate!

Tomorrow we visit CERN and go to Paris!
