El Yunque National Forest

On our second day in Puerto Rico, we went to the only rainforest in the United States. Shockingly, it was raining when we arrived. We were glad to find some of the trails open despite the government shutdown. Our first stop was La Coca falls.

We drove in a little further to Yokahu tower. Willow and River counted 63 steps up to the top. The views were stunning.

Next, we came to Juan Diego creek trail. Not everyone in our group wanted to brave the slippery stone stairs at the start of the trail.

River tackled the trail with no fear.

The trail was steep and slippery, but we were rewarded at the end with a waterfall pool.

We decided not to swim, but the kids did put their hands in, and I stepped in to rinse the squelchy mud from my shoes.

The trail was so lush and green.

The trees were covered with moss and the kids loved the way it felt.

The rain from the morning meant that all the waterfalls were full.

Driving down the mountain, we had views of the rainforest with the Caribbean in the background.

After going back to change clothes, we walked to the beach across the street again. We had it almost entirely to ourselves.

On the way home from the beach we stopped at Panaderia Espana. The person behind the counter spoke no English, so I dusted off my high school Spanish and ordered some food. It was an adventure but we ended up with some grilled-cheese type things that everyone liked. After dinner we watched the million cats outside.
